Health and Wellness

Extended Medical & Dental:  UNFI Canada is pleased to provide eligible associates and qualifying dependents with Extended Medical and Dental coverage through our insurance provider, Sun Life Assurance. Extended medical coverage includes prescription drugs, paramedical services including licensed dieticians and chiropractors and vision care.

Emergency Travel Assistance: Supplementary to the emergency portion of Sun Life’s Extended Medical coverage is Sun Life’s Medi-Passport benefit, which covers associates facing medical emergencies while travelling outside of the province.

Employee Assistance Plan: LifeScope, our EAP partner, provides resources to assist with many issues, including personal stress & anxiety, job stress & balance, marital problems, legal and financial concerns and many more. Associates may choose to speak with a counselor by phone or schedule an appointment anywhere in North America.

Income Protection

Long Term Disability (LTD): Providing protection from the unexpected for associates and their families is an important part of the UNFI Canada benefits program. LTD coverage through Sun Life allows eligible associates going on leaves of absence due to disability the opportunity to apply for financial assistance. LTD monthly premiums are deducted from the net income of covered associates so that benefit payments remain tax free.

Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D): Planning for your family’s financial security in the event of your death, sickness or serious injury is one of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones.  That is why UNFI Canada provides Basic Life and Accident Insurance for eligible associates – at no cost to you – plus the option of buying additional Supplemental Life and Accident for you and your family through payroll deductions.

Manulife Group Retirement Savings Plan: At UNFI Canada, we understand the importance of planning for retirement. Through our group plan with Manulife Financial, associates have the option of putting away a percentage of their earnings directly into a RRSP account, and while doing so, take advantage of UNFI Canada’s generous 50% matching policy of up to 3.5%.

 Work Life Balance

Associate Discounts: Associates have access to the products we sell at discounted prices. Associates can purchase from the warehouse or from any of the local Saturday Markets.

Company Events:  UNFI Canada has a number of Social Committees that fundraise throughout the year and with support from the company, organize events and gatherings that bring associates together in celebration of birthdays, holidays and other special occasions.  

Company volunteer opportunities: UNFI Canada has a number of Helping Hands Committees that are allocated a budget with which to make charitable donations to worthy local nonprofits that fall within certain guidelines. They are also responsible for coordinating volunteer projects and events in which associates can participate.

Corporate Giving - Philanthropic giving efforts are centered on the following:

-    Hunger: improving access to nutritious food for at-risk communities
-    Environment: supporting local preservation, conservation and restoration
-    Agriculture: supporting organic local agriculture & organic farming practices
-    Health  & Wellness: participating in local events and races

Associate Relief Fund: Serious illnesses or other emergency situations can occur in any family, making it difficult for a fellow UNFI Canada family member to meet the financial needs of their family at home.  The Associate Relief Fund to support those that are in need of short-term financial assistance. Associates can apply for a maximum of $1,000 in the event of a personal or family emergency. UNFI Canada matches all associate donations up to the first $10,000.
